Pit in the Ballencrieff estate, to the Coxrod Coal at 18 fathoms, Ball Coal at 50 fathoms

Mineral Statistics for 1883 records Hopetoun No.8 pit , owned by James Wood, manager Arch. Robertson, working the Coxrod Coal by the longwall method, employing 6 above and 17 below ground. The downcast shaft was 12' x 8' and 108 ft. deep. The upcast shaft was 10 x 8.5 ft and 68 ft deep. It was a non-fiery mine using furnace ventilation. The upcast was at No.11 Bathville.

The downcast shaft was 12' x 10' and 108 ft. deep. The upcast shaft was 10 x 8.5 ft and 68 ft deep. It was a non-fiery mine using furnace ventilation. The upcast was at No.11 Bathville

Pumping ceased c.1892 leading to flooding of the pit and connected workings. The pumping engine was dismantled and re-erected at Northrigg No.2 pit in 1901.
