Regional overview:
Mines in the Boghead coal

Pits to the Boghead Coal in the lands of Torbanehill. No.12 and No.13 pits are marked on a plan of Boghead Coal workings produced by James Russel & Son, who held mineral rights to the Torbanehill estate between 1850 and 1875. No surface workings are shown on Ordnance Survey maps at this point, and no traces survive in the landscape. There is no evidence that Boghead coal or associated minerals were wound to the surface by this shaft, and it might have been that the shaft was linked to other workings and used for pumping, ventilation, or escape purposes, or else a trial pit.
