DEATH FROM CHOKE DAMP.—Yesterday morning a miner, named George Gray, employed in pit No. 6, Hopetoun, belonging to Messrs James Russell & Son, met his death under the following painful circumstances: He had, in company with several other miners, a contract of a portion of the workings of said pit, and had gone along with another miner to a place in the pit for the purpose of moving some tools, he had arrived at the place, but his light was several times extinguished; and, venturing in the dark is search of his tools, was overtaken by the chokedamp, and succumbing to its effects soon thereafter died. Every caution which was thought necessary towards attempting to extricate him from his perilous position was used, but when access was gained to the place where he was, he was found to have breathed his last. He leaves a widow and children to mourn his loss
