The 1885 List of Mines records Stonehead No.2 pit, owned by Peter Thornton, manager Peter Thornton., working the Mill coal 3'3" by the stoop and room method, employing 3 on the surface and 16 underground, with downcast shaft 5' x 6', 120' deep, and upcast 5' x 6', 144' deep. It was a non-fiery mine ventilated by furnace.
