The 1885 List of Mines records Stonehead No.1 pit, owned by Peter Thornton, manager Peter Thornton., working the Mill coal 3'4" by the stoop and room method, employing 4 on the surface and 25 underground, with downcast shaft 10' x 5', 198' deep, and upcast 5' x 3', 216' deep. It was a non-fiery mine ventilated by furnace.
