    FATAL PIT ACCIDENT.

On Friday, a miner named John Martin was killed while working in No. 1 Conjoint Pit, on the lands of Fauldhouse, in the parish of Whitburn, at present occupied by the Coltness Iron Company. Deceased had just blasted a large mass of ironstone, and it is thought he had not allowed a sufficient time to elapse before hecommenced to fill his hutch, and a large stone falling from the roof while he was in the act of stooping, struck him on the back, crushing him beneath it. A man working at some distance heard the fall of the stone from the roof, and hastening to the 'spot, removed it from the unfortunate man, who was quite dead, his death having evidently been instantaneous.
