Ballencrieff (lands)

The lands of Ballencrieff were owned by the Earl of Hopetoun. The mineral rights were leased by James Russel & Son. from c.1850 - to 1875 who worked Boghead coal and Common coal at its many pits. The lands of Hardhill farm, in the south part of the estate, were sold to James Wood & Co.The Balbardie Colliery Co. Ltd. leased 1200 acres of Ballencrieff estate, c.1895, worked deeper seams of coalmostly from Easton pit.
