THE MARCH OF PROGRESS.--Just a week ago there was put into operation at Crofthead Colliery (Mr Peter Thornton's), a new coal cleaning and washing machine, supplied by Bell, of Wishaw. The removal of impurities from the various grades of coal is a most important matter, and to those coal-masters who are particular about having it thoroughly accomplished is sure to be a paying investment, and at the same time profitable to those who use the coal. In these days of keen competition the picking table and the draw washer are almost indispensable. We trust Mr Thornton's enterprise will be rewarded, and that our somewhat dull community will share in the success.

A good deal of idle time is being ezperienced by the miners hereabout, and the prospect is not too bright. It is reported that Mr. Thornton is to re-open Victoria (No.5 of Crofthead Collieries) and introduce coal cutting machines.

PITS CLOSE DOWN.—With the exception of clearing up operations, pumping, etc., work at Mr Peter Thornton’s Crofthead Collieries has entirely ceased, and preparations are being made to close down the North Pole and Victoria Pits. Fifty or sixty men are affected and some of those have already found work elsewhere, the likelihood being that gradually all the men will be absorbed into tho other pits in the district. Tho Crofthead pits for been going for long number of years, and the men are in hope that they will opened up again by some other firm. In the meantime, the workers’ houses at Eastfield Terrace belonging to Thornton have been taken over by Messrs Barr and Thornton, Ltd.
