New Mine Will Open Next Week – Work on the new Cuthill Mine Stoneyburn is expected to be completed this week-end, and production will start next week. At first 120 men will be employed and when fully developed it is expected more than 200 men will be employed for at least 20 years. The new mine will absorb all the men presently employed at Foulshields Colliery which is expected to close this year.

Cuthill Mine - Dip drivage in the coal at the new Cuthill surface drift mine has been delayed by passing through a belt of troubled ground with severe faulting on very steep end variable gradients. The faulting has necessitated considerable stone drivage which has to be completed before production can commence. Surface works, which are on conventional lines for new surface drift mines, have been completed. The run-of mine output will be transported by road to a suitable existing washer where it will be cleaned and prepared for the market.

Stoneyburn Mine Closed – Last Friday, the NCB closed Cuthill Mine, Stoneburn. but the closure is only temporary to allow further development at the mine. The 160 miners involved will be transferred to the adjoining Baads Colliery. Mr.William Welsh. Central Easr Area general manager for the Coal Board. said last Friday; "We are combining Cuthall and Baads. The whole of the output from the field of coal will be taken up at Baads."
