Serving Broxburn Oil Works

Two adits driven into the Broxburn Shale heading to the south and east of the mine head. The shale was transported to Broxburn Oil Works by standard gauge mineral railway.

The 1" "popular" OS map published c.1926 map appears to show a tramway running north from Carledubs towards Wyndford, crossing the Ecclesmachan to Greendykes road by a bridge. Sketch maps in the British Geological Survey collection show an adit at Wyndford, dipping east into the Broxburn shale. This is assumed to represent an extension of workings from Carledubs.

      • The above expenditure has chiefly been incurred in opening up Carledubs Mines, near Uphall Church, at the extreme west of the company's mineral field, and in making a railway 1.5 miles in length, to connect these mines with the works.
