Serving Boghall (Starlaw) Shale Oil Works (probably)

This shaft is marked "to Fells Shale" on various mining plans, but is not otherwise identified. This might have been Boghall No. 4 Pit which the mine abandonment register records as working the Fells Shale, and being abandoned in 1871.

See "Mines in the Boghall area" for further background.

Shale-field: Cousland and Seafield shale-field.

Mapped by the Ordnance Survey of c.1897, showing site of unidentified pit (Boghall No. 4?) to Raeburn Shale.
