Vertical shaft to the Fells shale

Serving Addiewell Oil Works

The site of Addiewell No. 6 Pit is only known from mine plans. These indicate that the pit was sunk to access the Fells Shale; a seam also worked from Addiewell No. 1, Addiewell No. 2 and Addiewell No. 5 Pits. No. 6 was not included in a list of active Addiewell pits in 1870, suggesting that the mine had been abandoned, perhaps in favour of the nearby No. 5 Pit?

Shale-field: West Calder shale-field.

Mapped by the Ordnance Survey of c.1895 with supposed site of Addiewell No. 6 Pit buried beneath spent shale from Addiewell Chemical Works.
