    • OIL DEPOTS FOR ORKNEY AND SHETLAND

At Kirkwall and Lerwick Petroleum spirit barrels may be carried on the deck of passenger or vessels to the extent of live barrels only. Hitherto oil companies have been feeding the Orkney Islands entirely by barrel. The Board of Trade are now to enforce the regulations, and consequently the oil companies intimate that they are to erect bulk oil depots at Kirkwall and Lerwick, and supply those depots by coastal tankers pumping 100 tons ashore per hour. Application has been made at Kirkwall for permission to lay six-inch pipe lines from Kirkwall Harbour site to be acquired from Kirkwall Town Council in Shore Street. Orkney Harbours Commissioners have remitted the application to their Works Committee.
