Lion oil works

Former parish and county:
Parish of Wigan, County of Lancashire
Owner:
Williams & Lamb, John Lamb and Co.
Opened:
pre-1872
Closed:
post-1944

A long-lived oil works on the banks of the Leeds and Liverpool canal close to the centre of Wigan. There is no evidence that oil was retorted from coal or cannel slack at that site, however the refining and blending of locally-produced oils seems likely to have taken place there.

William and Lamb's patent oils were marketed until 1873, when the partnership was dissolved and the business carried forward as John Lamb & Co.
