A band of Jurassic-age Kimmeridge clay runs across England from Whitby to Weymouth. The Kimmeridge shale associated with it can be retorted to produce a crude oil, however its high sulphur content substantially limits its value.

The Dorset shale oil industry is considered in its own section. Works elsewhere in the Kimmeridege shale districts at Kilve, Setch and Grosmont failed to produce any significant quantity of oil.
