Pit Pony Drivers' Awards

Following a recent inspection of ponies in the Shale Mines belonging to Scottish Oils Ltd., the Scottish Society for the Prevention on Cruelty to Animals have awarded Certificates and small money prizes to pony drivers and ostlers for their meritorious care of the ponies, viz: - ... No. 35 Pit. Hopetoun - Harold Archibald, Pat McWilliams, Alec Callaghan and Thomas Blackhall... In a letter from the Secretary of the S.S.P.C.A., he states "I shall be obliged if you would kindly arrange for the presentation of Certificates and money, and convey to those concerned the congratulations of my Directors. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for the courtesy your officials invariably extend to the Society's Inspectors when paying visits to the mines." The Certificates and prizes were presented to the pony drivers and ostlers in the various districts by the respective Mining Managers, who congratulated the winners.
