Archibald Reid (3 January 1873 to 16 March 1952) was 23 at the time of winning the trophy and was a shale miner (hewer) living at Vennel Cottage, 34 Main Street, Kirknewton. Archibald was known as Archibald 'Baldy' Reid and often gave visitors a run for their money when they came to play in the Kirknewton Handicap ('The Kirknewton Story', Kenneth Roy and T.L. Hardie, 1974, p.43).

Ardhibald married Jessie Dow Bishop (4 April 1877 to 28 February 1960) and together they lived with their 7 children above the village shop in Main Street, Kirknewton. Jessie ran the shop as a general store and was known for her home-made ice cream and toffee apples.
