Description

Wooden box with blue velvet lining containing incomplete set (9 of 12) small lead or mercury weighted specific gravity hydrometers from the laboratory at Pumpherston oil works.

Some of these have certificates of examination against national standards issued to their manufacturer, A. Gallencamp & Co, which are dated 1925 and 1927.

Scottish Oil's laboratory at Pumpherston monitored the production of oils and other products, and undertook the testing and development of new production processes. Hydrometers are used to measure the specific gravity or density of liquids. The instrument is placed into an oil sample and the level at which it floats is read against a scale within the instrument. This provides a measure of the specific gravity of the oil
