Description

Glass plate negative of technical drawing plan of Henderson's patent retort for the Broxburn Oil Co., Broxburn showing a cross section taken at various levels, c. 1880. Box labelled "Wax Plant".

In 1873 Norman Henderson patented a new design of retort using the further oxidation of spent shale to help heat the retort. This reduced fuel costs. The initial success of the Broxburn Oil Company founded in 1878 with Henderson as manager was due in part to adoption of this retort.

One of a series of lantern slides / glass plate negatives, thought to be used by Scottish Oils Ltd for instructional lectures
