Crude shale oil had a high proportion of wax which had to be separated from the heavier fractions of oil. This was usually achieved by refrigeration of the mixture allowing the physical removal of flakes of wax from a rotating drum. The use of Kirk's cooling apparatus at Young's works c. 1860 represented one of the first industrial uses of refrigeration plant. This apparatus patented by Norman Henderson, General Manager of the Broxburn Oil Company, improved on the principal of this earlier equipment.

One of a series of lantern slides / glass plate negatives, thought to be used by Scottish Oils Ltd for instructional lectures
