Description

Copper vessel by Gallencamp, used for determination of wax melting points, c. 1955, from Pumpherston Refinery Laboratory.

Used in the Laboratory at Pumpherston works to determine the melting point of wax samples. The wax sample was placed in the centre of the copper vessel, the surrounding water jacket was then heated with a Bunsen burner and the temperature at which the solid wax became liquid was noted. This was part of the quality control of the products of the oil refining processes. Small samples of the various products were submitted to the laboratories, within the works, and the various tests carried out to ensure a consistent and high quality
