Galvanised trays used for casting wax slabs prior to penetration testing from Pumpherston Oil Refinery, c. 1955.
Molten wax was poured into this tray and cooled, the slab was then used in the penetration tester as in 1990.010. This small galvanised tray was used to cast slabs of wax for penetration testing, i.e. to test its hardness. This was part of the quality control of the products of the oil refining processes. Small samples of the various products were submitted to the laboratories, within the works, and the various tests carried out to ensure a consistent and high quality.
