Wax penetration testing equipment by Standard Engineering Co Ltd. England, c. 1950, from Pumpherston Refinery Laboratory.
Used in the laboratory at Pumpherston Refinery to test the hardness or consistency of waxes. A sample placed in to instrument was subjected to a standard impact and the deformation of the wax was then measured. This was part of the quality control of the products of the oil refining processes. Small samples of the various products were submitted to the laboratories, within the works, and the various tests carried out to ensure a consistent and high quality
