Description

Timber and tinplate model showing three horizontal retorts, each showing different arrangements set into a wooden case that is hinged to show the internal arrangement.

Said to be constructed by/for James Young, and certainly originating from Limefield House, circa 1870

The model was donated by BP at Grangemouth where it was repaired during the 1960's and a plate affixed stating "Model of experimental retort used at Bathgate by Dr. James Young". Members of the Young family recall the model in the family home at Limefield House and it seems likely that it has close associations with James Young's work. The arrangement of the model however appears more suited for gas production and seems more complex than the plant described to have been used in Bathgate.
