Description

Young's Paraffin Light & Mineral Oil Company Ltd table lamp.

Heavy brass base, incorporating three turned pinnacles, fluted brass stem, brass reservoir incorporating central draught arrangement and a Court 20" burner. Wick control wheel inlayed with black composition embossed "Young's central draught, 20"court", circa 1900

The Court burner had a single circular wick drawing air through its centre from vents below the reservoir. It was made in 10", 16", 20" and 30" sizes. Young's Paraffin Light and Mineral Oil Co was the only one of the shale oil companies to manufacture their own oil lamps. Production started in Edinburgh c 1865, transferred to Clissold Works, Birmingham in 1879 and continued until c.1935
