James McArthur, faceman, workmen's inspector and rescue worker, was one of the first men to try to reach those trapped by the explosion at Burngrange No 1 & 2 Pit on 10th January 1947. He was employed by Scottish Oils Ltd, and along with D. Brown, he attempted unsuccessfully to reach the trapped men while wearing breathing apparatus. He gave evidence to the subsequent inquiry. The framed certificate was awarded by the Carnegie Hero Fund Trust on 29th January 1948 "in recognition of heroic endeavour to save human life on 10th January 1947".

Donated by James McArthur, Polbeth, West Calder.
